A motorcycle overtaking another caused the fatal collision of Diogo, an 8-year-old boy who ended up in serious emergency care, as he walked with his mother, stepfather and another child on the EN4 road between Passil and Atalaya, in Alcochete, on Sunday.
According to an official source of the National Research Institute investigating the accident, the first indications are that a motorcycle was overtaken, which was traveling in the opposite direction and forced the ambulance driver to swerve closer to the side of the road where the family was traveling. This swerve caused Diogo to hit the rear-view mirror on the right side. The collision was violent and caused serious injuries to the child, who was nevertheless treated but did not survive. The parents had to receive assistance and psychological support from INEM.
The news of Diogo’s death plunged the town of Passil into mourning. “My rich boy, you are gone so soon. You played with us, you smiled, you cried, you grew up. That smile of yours will always remain in our memory,” wrote a local school assistant.
