This Tuesday, the parliamentary group PS expressed concern about the published results of the elections in Venezuela and called for respect for the will of the people of that country, calling for “full transparency” in the electoral process with the disclosure of all documents.
In a message sent to editors, Socialist MPs welcomed the “significant participation of the population” in Sunday’s elections in Venezuela, but expressed “their deep concern about the announced election results.”
“It is essential that the credibility of the results effectively reflect the will of the Venezuelan people. Therefore, the PS deputies call for full transparency of the electoral process, with access and disclosure of documents from all polling stations and effective results,” they ask.
This concern of the PS, according to the same statement, “is in line with the positions expressed by the European Union and the United States of America, which have demanded respect for the legitimate results of the elections and the disclosure of all information on the electoral act”.
The Socialists also regret that “millions of Venezuelans abroad, including many Portuguese-Venezuelans living in Portugal, have had difficulty voting,” noting that only about 69,000 resident Venezuelans have been able to do so, representing “a tiny fraction of the approximately seven million who have emigrated in recent years.”
Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) on Monday formally declared Nicolás Maduro president after announcing Sunday night that the Chavista leader, in power since 2013, had won the election, a result rejected by the opposition.
The PS note said that “Maduro’s victory was declared ‘irreversible’ when 80% of the votes were counted, without the publication of partial results from all polling stations.”
“According to the CNE, there is a possibility that the final result will exceed 100%, which cannot be confirmed without access to the full results of the electoral process,” the Socialists also note.
Nicolás Maduro immediately responded to the CNE statement, stressing that he had accomplished a feat by defeating “fascism” in Sunday’s elections.
“The victory over fascism, demons, demons is a historic feat, and our people did it, our people did it again,” the Chavista leader emphasized after receiving from the hands of CNE President Elvis Amoroso a symbolic certificate that will allow him to govern the country until 2031.
On Sunday evening, the CNE announced that Maduro had been re-elected for a third consecutive term with 51.20% of the vote, beating opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who received just under 4.5 million (44.2%).
Several countries have already congratulated Maduro on his victory, such as Russia, Nicaragua, Cuba, China and Iran, but in addition to Portugal, democratic countries such as Spain and the United States have shown greater concern about the transparency of the elections in Venezuela.
