Duarte Cordeiro, former Minister of Environment and former number two in the Lisbon City Council under Fernando Medina, will be named as a defendant in Operation Tutti-Frutti, NOW has learned. Absent on holiday abroad, Duarte Cordeiro has assured that he has not been notified, denying that he has been formally charged.
According to NOW sources connected to the trial, more than 50 defendants are already involved in the trial, most of them representatives of the Social Democratic Party.
Duarte Cordeiro is being considered by the Socialist Party as a possible candidate for the Lisbon Chamber in the local council elections next year. Fernando Medina will also face charges of alleged malfeasance.
The prosecutor’s office has already asked to lift the parliamentary immunity of the current PS deputy. Medina denies all suspicions. A year ago, the republic’s attorney general created a super team – five judges from the Ministry of State and five inspectors of the judicial police – to complete the investigation into Operation Tutti-Frutti, which began in 2017.
All remained on an exclusive basis until the investigation was completed.
