A raid by the Prison Intervention and Security Group (GISP), an elite prison guard unit specialising in restoring security in prisons, led to the confiscation of 22 mobile phones and four homemade bladed weapons at the Setubal prison early Thursday morning.
The operation was ordered by the General Directorate of the Prison Service and involved 60 GISP members. He ordered a search of all the cells in the prison, which currently houses 160 inmates and just over 50 guards.
Contacted CMFrederico Morais, president of the National Union of Prison Guards, believes that “these operations are very important at a time when there is a huge shortage of guards.”
“It is also worth noting the high professionalism of all participants in the intervention,” he concluded.
