Lufthansa computer crash affects Frankfurt and Munich airports

This Wednesday, Frankfurt and Munich airports, Germany’s most important airports, experienced major disruptions to air traffic due to a computer failure caused by construction work that affected Lufthansa group flights.

“All departures and arrivals in Frankfurt are currently suspended,” while traffic “from or to Munich airport has been partially affected,” the group said in a statement sent to AFP.

A computer glitch has led to the cancellation of several flights operated by Lufthansa, which also owns Austrian Airlines, Swiss and Brussels Airlines.

“We still don’t have data on the number of flights affected by these disruptions,” a spokesman for the AFP group said.

Due to a lack of seats while the Lufthansa planes were on the ground, there was “no landing” at Frankfurt Airport for several hours.

In the late morning, “some planes were able to land, but in isolation,” he added.

The fault was caused by “construction work in the Frankfurt area,” Lufthansa said on Twitter, adding that it was looking for a solution.

Four Internet cables operated by Deutsche Telekom were “damaged” Tuesday evening during work on a rail line, causing a computer system to fail, a spokesman for the telecommunications group told AFP, explaining that two cables had already been repaired.
