About 75 thousand young people have already received reimbursement of tuition fees

About 75,000 young people have already received a salary supplement to improve their skills, the Finance Ministry said on Friday, adding that the Tax Service is still processing requests for refunds of tuition fees.

According to a report sent to Lusa, as of Wednesday, the Tax Administration (AT) had already processed 91,585 requests previously confirmed by the Directorates General of Education and Science Statistics and Higher Education.

Of these, 79,578 requests were confirmed, and on 1 August AT carried out 74,917 transfers totalling €68.8 million.

The remaining 4,661 confirmed requests have not yet been paid due to the lack of bank details on the Financial Portal.

There were also around 12,000 requests that were not confirmed by AT, “because they did not meet any of the requirements, such as maximum age, residence in Portuguese territory or did not declare category A or B income,” the finance ministry added.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation’s services sent the last verified candidates, and AT is in the processing stage.

The salary supplement for advanced training, provided for in the 2024 State Budget, is intended for young people up to 35 years of age who live and work in Portugal and have obtained a degree or master’s degree in public, private, national or foreign higher education institutions, in 2023 or earlier, provided that the time is less than the number of years the course lasts.

The award, which consists of a reimbursement of tuition fees, corresponds to an annual tuition fee of €697 for a Bachelor’s degree and €1,500 for a Master’s degree for a period equivalent to the duration of the course.

For example, in the case of a three-year course of study, young people will receive three annual bonuses of 697 euros.

Payment for confirmed orders is made by AT bank transfer using the bank details specified on the Financial Portal.
