13-year-old boy and two other surfers rescued on Ericeira beach

Three surfers aged 13, 34 and 44 who found themselves in trouble in the water at Ribeira d’Ilhas beach in Ericeira, Mafra municipality, Lisbon district, were rescued alive on Saturday, an official source said.

A press release from the National Maritime Administration reported that the Ericeira rescue station team rescued this Saturday afternoon “three surfers of American, Portuguese and Brazilian nationality, aged 13, 34 and 44 years old.

The alert for the incident was received at 15:30 by elements of the SeaWatch beach surveillance project, reporting that three surfers were having difficulty in the water, as well as members of the Ericeira lifeguard station crew and elements of the Mafra City Council, the surveillance enhancement group, the GNR and Ericeira volunteer firefighters.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the rescue station crew discovered that the surfers, who were physically healthy and did not require medical assistance, had been carried away by the current into an inaccessible area, with no way to return to land, and they immediately rescued and transported them to the sandy beach of Ribeira d’Ilhas, with the support of the lifeguards on duty.”
