European countries urge their citizens to leave Lebanon

Britain, France and Italy over the weekend urged their citizens to leave Lebanon as quickly as possible amid the growing risk of a direct confrontation between Israel and Iran following the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr.

“We advise all British citizens to leave Lebanon while commercial flights are still available,” British MNE David Lammy said on Saturday evening, adding that the UK was preparing contingency plans in case a large-scale evacuation was required. The call was echoed yesterday by France and Italy, which urged their citizens to leave the region immediately “due to the deteriorating situation.” Several airlines, including Air France and Lufthansa, have stopped flights to Beirut in recent days over security concerns.

Iran and its “Axis of Resistance” allies, which include Hezbollah, Hamas, Yemen’s Houthis and several Shiite groups in Iraq and Syria, have vowed to avenge the deaths of Haniyeh and Shukr, raising fears of an unprecedented attack on Israel, which has promised to retaliate in kind, plunging the entire region into conflict with unpredictable consequences.
