Drinking water from plastic bottles can raise blood pressure due to microplastics entering the bloodstream, according to a study conducted by the Department of Medicine in London. At the private Danube University in Australia, microplastics have also been found in glass bottles, although in smaller quantities.
The study participants (eight men and eight women) who stopped drinking liquids from plastic and glass bottles and drank only tap water for two weeks had lower blood pressure levels, the study explains. Daily mail.
The researchers said that “Based on the findings that indicate a reduction in blood pressure with reduced plastic consumption, it is hypothesized that plastic particles present in the bloodstream may contribute to increased blood pressure.”
Research even shows that microplastics – microscopic fragments that result from the breakdown of plastic by UV light or bottle breakage – are ubiquitous and present in high concentrations in water from plastic bottles.
Medical analysis has found microplastics in human saliva, heart tissue, liver, kidneys and even placenta.
Taking into account the findings of the study published in the journal MicroplasticsExperts recommend avoiding bottled drinks and opting for tap water when it is safe to drink.
