According to results released on Monday, the average grades of students sitting the second stage of the national secondary education exams were negative in three of the 24 subjects assessed, including Mathematics A, one of the most competitive tests.
According to data from the National Examinations Jury (JNE), published this Monday by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation, 76,886 tests were conducted in 24 subjects in the second stage of the national secondary education examinations.
The average grades were positive in the vast majority, but there were three subjects where the grades fell below 10 points.
Portuguese Literature had the lowest average score, with 8.3 points out of the 118 students assessed, followed by Mathematics A (9.6 points) and Philosophy (9.9 points).
Mathematics A was also one of the most popular tests, with 11,726 students taking it, in addition to Physics and Chemistry A (12,027 tests), Portuguese (12,702 tests) and Biology and Geology (17,052 tests).
Of the subjects for which at least 1,000 tests were taken, English performed best, scoring an average of 15.1 points, followed by Drawing A (14.5 points) and Economics A (11.7 points).
Compared with Stage 2 last year, grades improved significantly in Portuguese, English, History A, Mathematics, Applied Social Sciences and Drawing A, with a difference of nine to six points.
On the other hand, Physics and Chemistry A, Descriptive Geometry A, Biology and Geology, and Economics A worsened by 10-7 points.
“In the 2nd stage, the assessment of the oral component and the interaction component of the national foreign language exams included 1,882 assessments of the oral component, of which 1,566 were in English, 161 in Spanish, 58 in Spanish, 49 in German, 47 in French and 1 in Italian,” the JNE note says.
The results of 6,230 9th grade final exams held in 1,219 schools were also released on Monday.
At the same time, the guardianship authorities say that the 2nd stage was aimed at students who managed to pass the 3rd cycle, “naturally, at those students who demonstrated great difficulties throughout the entire school year.”
As for the 1st stage, the average scores were lower: 44 points on a scale from 0 to 100 in Portuguese and 25 points in mathematics.
