Israel was on high alert Monday night over the possibility of a large-scale attack by Iran and its allies, with the US warning that military action could begin “in the next few hours” and the Tehran regime warning airlines to avoid the country’s airspace.
An aviation alert (NOTAM) issued yesterday afternoon is the starkest indication yet that military action is imminent. The warning urges airlines to avoid the center, west and northwest of the country, likely routes used by Iranian missiles and drones that would be used in the attack.
The US also warned that the attack would last “hours”, even saying it could begin as early as yesterday evening, with President Joe Biden urgently convening his National Security Council to monitor possible developments.
Israel’s air defenses were on high alert, but the Armed Forces were also ordered to be ready to “go on the attack,” a clear sign that Israel intended to retaliate.
The Iranian regime assured on Monday that it has no intention of starting a regional war, but that “it is its duty to punish Israel” for the death of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader killed last week in Tehran. At the same time, Iran has requested an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation for tomorrow, leading some observers to speculate that it may delay its response until after that meeting.
