More than 50 municipalities in Portugal at maximum fire risk

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), more than 50 municipalities in the north and center of the country, as well as in the Algarve, are at maximum risk of fire this Tuesday.

IPMA also placed at very high risk around 70 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Beja, Portalegre, Santarem, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Coimbra, Guarda, Viseu, Braga, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Bragança.

Dozens of other municipalities in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Viseu, Santarem, Lisbon, Setubal, Evora, Portalegre, Beja and Faro are in high-risk zones.

IPMA forecasts that these fire danger levels will continue in the coming days.

The fire risk defined by IPMA has five levels, from ‘reduced’ to ‘maximum’, and calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the past 24 hours.

Tuesday will see slightly lower temperatures inland and higher maximums in the eastern Algarve, with morning cloudiness on the west coast, with the possibility of drizzle and occasional strong winds on the western coastal strip and in the highlands.

Minimum temperatures will range from 15°C (Viseu) to 21°C (Faro), and maximums from 24°C (Viana do Castelo, Porto and Aveiro) to 38°C (Castelo Branco).
