The SDP’s parliamentary leader on Tuesday called on the PS to “put its hand on its conscience” and recognise that unity was needed to rebuild the NHS from the “collapse that has resulted from the last eight years” of government.
“The PS must raise its conscience. The task of rebuilding the SNS after the collapse of the last eight years is enormous and requires everyone’s help,” defended the president of the PSD parliamentary group, Hugo Soares, in a statement to the Lusa agency, on the day that the Socialists begin a tour of health facilities to assess the impact of the closure of emergency gynecology and obstetrics departments.
According to Hugo Soares, PS “instead of taking advantage of the problems it left behind, should put its hand on its conscience” and “even PCP and BE are not innocent”.
“We don’t need opportunism at this point. We need national unity to restore the SNS,” the leader of the Social Democratic Party said.
Hugo Soares’ statements came after the PS announced on Sunday that it would demand meetings with hospitals that have closed emergency departments and asked Prime Minister Luis Montenegro to present measures to help resolve the difficulties of the National Health Service.
“Given the seriousness of the problems faced by the SNS, the PS parliamentary group will request meetings with the administrations of these SNS. [Unidades Locais de Saúde] and will ask for these meetings to be held next week,” said João Paulo Correia, coordinator of the PS parliamentary group on health, commenting on the closure this weekend of more than 10 emergency care points in the fields of gynecology, obstetrics and pediatrics in the country.
