Environmentalists destroy Messi’s mansion in Ibiza

Messi’s home on the Spanish island of Ibiza has been vandalised by environmental activists who want to draw attention to the “responsibility of the rich for the climate crisis”, AFP reports.

Members of the Futuro Vegetal group released a video in front of a mansion on the west coast of Ibiza with a sign reading: “Help the planet, eat the rich. Get rid of the police.” Activists splashed red and black paint on the building’s facade.

In a statement, the group said they intended to use this “non-violent civil disobedience” to denounce government policies that are worsening the climate crisis, as well as the “unequal responsibility” for fighting change.

Campaigners pointed to research showing that the world’s richest 1% produces the same amount of carbon dioxide emissions as the poorest two-thirds, yet it is those with the least financial means who bear the greatest damage from climate change.

The group claims the construction of the Argentine footballer’s home is “illegal” because Messi bought it for 11 million euros.

This is the second time Futuro Vegetal has chosen Ibiza for protests. Last summer he vandalised a nightclub and attended a party at a luxury nightclub.
