Unemployment rate in Angola fell in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 29.6%

The unemployment rate in Angola declined year-on-year in Q4 2022 to 29.6%, but remains above 50% in the younger 15-24 age group.

According to the employment survey released on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics, the unemployed population aged 15 and over is estimated at 4,921,440 (-8% year-on-year), including 29.6% of economically active Angolans (-3.3 percentage points) . compared to the last quarter of 2021).

The unemployment rate in urban areas (38.5%) is about three times higher than in rural areas (13.5%), with a difference of 25 percentage points, and the most affected age group are young people aged 15 to 24 . the unemployment rate is 52.9%, which is still lower than the 59.8% registered in the last quarter of 2021.

On a quarterly basis, unemployment for those aged 15 and over increased by 0.2% between October and December 2022 compared to the previous three months, and the unemployment rate for the population aged 15 and over decreased by 0.4 percentage points.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, among the working-age population (those aged 15 and over), 11,682,309 people said they worked for others, as self-employed or in a family business.

About 50% of the employed population works in agriculture, animal husbandry, hunting, forestry and fishing, followed by wholesale and retail trade with 21.7%.

Most of the population works in the private sector and 80.5% have informal jobs, of which 72.3% are men and 87.9% are women.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, the majority of informal workers were self-employed (50.3%), family workers (29.5%) and own-consumption workers (10.7%), with informal employment rates higher in rural areas than in cities. areas.

The inactive population aged 15 and over is estimated at 1,895,829 with an inactivity rate of 10.2%.

The highest values ​​are found in the age groups of 65 years and older (an age group in which many people are pensioners and others are physically unable to work due to advanced age) and in young people aged 15-24 years (age group). a group that includes other students), which is 15.8%.
