PAN is implementing projects to restore justice for the “18 nurses who were discriminated against because they were mothers”

This Thursday, PAN presented two diplomas to Parliament to ensure the promotion to the level of specialist nurses of 18 professionals from the Regional Health Directorate of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, “discriminated in their careers because they were mothers.”

In a statement, the People-Animals-Nature party announced that it would introduce a bill and a resolution to the Assembly of the Republic to restore justice to nurses “discriminated against for being mothers.”

The party led by Inés Souza Real also sent a request to Health Minister Ana Paula Martins, asking her about the situation of “about 300 nurses who have re-entered the National Health Service and whose seniority has not been fully taken into account, if .”

In order to find a “solution to the serious problem of the 18 ARSLVT nurses”, during the current legislative assembly, PAN submitted a request addressed to the Minister of Health and a question addressed to the Minister of State and the Minister of Finance, which was not given any response.”

“This situation has caused great wear and tear and is particularly reprehensible because it is gender discrimination, especially coming from a public institution,” said Ines Souza Real, quoted in the statement.

According to PAN, six years later, “despite numerous positive opinions and the recent agreement of the State Department of Health, the situation of discrimination against 18 nurses in the mobility competition for the category of specialist nurses, because they were on parental leave or had a high-risk pregnancy, remains unresolved.”

“Given the seriousness of the situation and the delay in its resolution by the Government and the ARSLVT, the PAN believes that the time has come for the Assembly of the Republic to take all possible steps to eliminate as soon as possible the injustice to which these 18 ARSLVT specialist nurses are subject,” the text says.

With these two projects, PAN aims to “ensure the fair repositioning of nurses who, due to being on maternity leave, clinical risk leave during pregnancy or similar rights, have not been able to move to another job from the category of nurse to the category of specialist nurse, in accordance with Article 8 of Decree-Law No. 71/2019, of 27 May”.

In the request to the Minister of Health, the party asks about the situation of about 300 nurses who have worked for years only after rejoining the SNS and/or were hired in various health care institutions for the purpose of career advancement. . SNS without a fixed-term, despite having already served there for several years, under replacement contracts (fixed-term and/or open-ended employment contracts).

This party states that “in practice, a nurse who worked in the SNS between 2006 and 2018, but interrupted her work and resumed it again, for example, in 2020, sees that only the years of work in 2020 are counted, while the entire period of previously performed work is ignored.”

“This has led to a situation of great injustice: several nurses with about 20 years of public service are paid the same as nurses who have just started their nursing careers,” Ines Souza Real said in a statement.
