Prime Minister Luis Montenegro congratulated Portuguese cyclist Yuri Leitan on Thursday, who won the silver medal in the omnium at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, on a “thrilling race”.
“In a thrilling race, Youri Leitan brings Portugal back to the Olympic podium with a silver medal in the all-around. What a pride. Congratulations to Youri Leitan,” the official wrote on the social network X.
According to Montenegro, Portuguese cycling should also be congratulated on this Olympic track medal, as it is “always at the highest level”.
This Thursday, Leitan finished the omnium with 153 points, behind the Frenchman Benjamin Thomas (164) and ahead of the Belgian Fabio van den Bossche (131), giving the second medal to the Portuguese mission in Paris 2024 after the bronze in judo. Patricia Sampaio, weight -78 kg.
The 26-year-old Viviano native won Portugal’s first track medal and the second in Portuguese cycling history at the Olympic Games after Sergio Paulinho finished second in the long-distance race in Athens in 2004.
