The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Thursday highlighted the “great joy” for Portugal that cyclist Youri Leitan won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Paris.

And we are waiting for gold medals,” commented Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa outside the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, which he visited accompanied by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and Health Minister Ana Paula Martins.
Shortly after this comment, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa posted a note on the presidential website congratulating Youri Leitan on winning the silver medal in the Omnium cycling race at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
“The 2023 World Champion has always been at the highest level in the four sports that make up the sport, winning Portugal’s first Olympic medal in track cycling. On behalf of Portugal and the Portuguese, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa thanks Youri Leitan, who: this spectacular performance contributes to the development of the national sport,” the note says.
Luis Montenegro also expressed his joy at winning the medal, telling reporters that he would be heading to Paris today to watch Portugal’s competitions, especially in canoeing and athletics.
Cyclist Youri Leitan won the silver medal in the omnium at Paris 2024 today, taking the Portuguese sport’s 30th Olympic podium, the second at this year’s Games after the bronze of judoka Patricia Sampaio (-78 kg).
