Paula Rego painting “Banana Woman” sold at auction for 266,000 euros

The painting “Banana Woman” by Portuguese artist Paula Rego was sold at auction on Wednesday for 266,000 euros, auctioneer Veritas said.

Described as acrylic on paper and dated 1982, the 121cm x 151cm Banana Woman was offered at auction on Wednesday for between €150,000 and €200,000.

“L’Inondation” by Maria Elena Vieira da Silva (1908–1992), which was offered at auction in the amount of 250,000 euros, remained unsold.

Among other items at Wednesday’s auction was Helena Almeida’s “A Onda”, which sold for 120,910 euros.

According to the auctioneer, O Percurso do Sol by Julian Sarmento was sold for more than 48,000 euros.

An untitled painting by Nadir Afonso, dated 1987, exceeded 20,000 euros, while Graça Morais’ O Interdito Transfigurado exceeded 24,000 euros.

These works were part of the Veritas Modern and Contemporary Art Auction – painting, drawing, photography or sculpture – which took place on Wednesday evening, which also featured works by, among others, Cruzeiro Seixas, Joao Penalva, Fernando Callau, Manuel Amado. and Noronha da Costa.
