Paediatrician and author Vitor Gatinho, who has thousands of followers on social media, has twice won the award for best podcast in Germany in the “Ratgeber” category for recommendations and advice.
“Hello, Kids.Doc hier” is how Vitor Gatinho begins almost every video he posts on Instagram. The 41-year-old pediatrician, the son of Portuguese parents, born in Frankfurt, took his first steps on social media in August 2020.
“There were a lot of restrictions because of Covid-19. At first you could go out, then just a little bit, and I was bored, I had nothing to do. I started with TikTok, I saw other doctors, especially Americans, making videos, and I thought it was a joke. So I started making my own. At first I didn’t talk, I just showed and wrote, but I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain everything in 30 seconds,” he told Lusa.
From TikTok, he moved to Instagram, where he now has more than 700,000 followers from 120 family and friends. This year, for the first time, he took to multiple stages to interact with an audience that usually followed him through their mobile screens.
“In March and April of this year, I visited four cities: Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Munich. The goal was to give parents the opportunity to spend a day getting information and at the same time get a break from their children,” he described, amid laughter.
In addition to videos and a tour of Kids.doc, Vitor Gatinho explains various issues related to childhood and adolescence in a simple manner in the podcast, from the use of pacifiers to the use of probiotics. The podcast, which was launched three years ago, has already won the award for the best podcast in Germany twice in the category “Ratgeber” for recommendations and advice.
The pediatrician, who continues to live in Frankfurt but visits Portugal several times a year, has also written three books, one of which Spiegel called “Platz 1 Bestseller.”
“Until January of this year, I was still able to work five days a week at the clinic. But it became very difficult and there were three of me (…) I have three children and a wife and it is no longer possible to combine everything. . So I will not have to work at night or on weekends,” he explained.
Vitor Gatinho admits he has trouble finding time to create content in Portuguese, given his ongoing tour, another book he plans to write, this time about adolescence, and a mobile phone app that is already several months old.
“If it was with artificial intelligence, maybe, but my Portuguese is not good enough to make videos, and in Portugal there are a lot of things that work differently too,” he suggested.
However, he does not hide his desire to see his books translated into Portuguese.
