This Sunday, a baby was born in an ambulance at the A10 roundabout in Benavente, with the help of two firefighters. If the birth had not taken place in the vehicle, the 19-year-old pregnant woman would have been taken to the Abrantes maternity hospital, 120 kilometers away.
João Costa and Mário Gil are the firefighters who helped deliver baby Catarina in a Benavente fire engine during a weekend that saw the closure of five gynecology and obstetrics emergency departments.
According to the emergency schedule published on the SNS portal, on Saturday at 11:30 p.m. the following emergency gynecology and obstetrics departments were closed for the weekend: São Bernardo Hospital, Setúbal, Nossa Senhora do Rosário Hospital, Barreiro, Vila Franca de Xira Hospital, Caldas da Rainha Hospital and Santo André Hospital, Leiria.
SNS urges the public to “always call the SOS pregnancy line before going to the emergency gynaecology service.”
