The President of the Republic wants “the country to serve the youth and the young people to serve the country.”

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, celebrated International Youth Day this Monday, calling on “everyone to make it possible to build a country at the service of youth and young people at the service of the country.”

“On this day, I call on everyone to make it possible for the country to serve young people and for young people to serve the country, working together for the Portugal we want,” reads the message of the head of state, published on the official website of the President of the Republic.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa wanted to mark International Youth Day “with recognition of the challenges and legitimate ambitions of all young people” and “confidence in their valuable contribution to building a more sensitive, prosperous and cohesive society committed to building the common good.”

“Today I celebrate International Youth Day, convinced of the importance of all those who build our present and are the guarantors of our tomorrow,” he said.

August 12 was declared International Youth Day in 1999 following the recommendation of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, which took place in Portugal in 1998.
