Montenegro pledges to give young people in Portugal ‘the future they deserve’

Prime Minister Luis Montenegro marked International Youth Day this Monday and reaffirmed his commitment to “giving young people the future they deserve,” promising “the tools to get good qualifications, good jobs and good opportunities.”

“On International Youth Day, I remember the commitment we will not relent from: giving young people the future they deserve,” reads a post by Luis Montenegro on the social network X.

The Prime Minister promises to give young people “the tools to get good skills, good jobs and good opportunities”, allowing them “to be who they want to be in a safe, resilient and vibrant country”.

Luis Montenegro and the Minister of Youth and Modernization, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, celebrate the day with a video on the social network Instagram.

“Today is International Youth Day. In Portugal we are creating many conditions to offer more opportunities to young Portuguese people,” says the Prime Minister.

Luis Montenegro believes that the government’s investment in young Portuguese “is an investment in the future of Portugal.”

The Minister for Youth and Modernisation recalls some of the key measures the current Chief Executive has dedicated to young people, such as not paying stamp duty, levy and BMI when buying their first home until they are 35.

“For young people who want to pursue higher education and who are concerned that it is very difficult to access affordable rooms, we have already guaranteed over 700 beds in higher education institutions and are working with universities and polytechnics to have more beds available from September,” he adds.

Margarida Balseiro Lopes also noted that mental health is a “problem” for young people too.

“We have already guaranteed more than 100 thousand consultations on psychology, as well as more than 50 thousand consultations on nutrition,” he adds.

The minister also noted that “for young people who are working and fear losing access to the scholarship (currently up to 14 times the national minimum wage), there is no penalty for taking the scholarship.”

“These are the first decisions we have made with you in mind, but we are not going to stop there,” the youth minister promises.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, also celebrated International Youth Day this Monday, calling on “everyone to make it possible for the country to serve young people and for young people to serve the country.”
