Two young women were shot dead by a 74-year-old former Spanish soldier on Tuesday evening near the Povoa e Meadas dam in Castelo de Vide, in the Portalegre region.
The women, aged 17 and 22, from Lisbon and Castelo de Vide respectively, had travelled to the region late in the day and were attacked as they were about to get up.
The suspect, who lived in the area and was known as “Manolo,” threatened and attempted to rape the victims while carrying a shotgun. The incident occurred at 9 p.m., but they were not rescued until 11 p.m.
When the young women contacted a friend, he alerted the authorities.
When authorities arrived, they found the victims naked to the waist and with their hands bound with duct tape. The younger one had an arm injury, the older one had a shoulder injury. The shots were reportedly fired as the two were trying to escape.
The man was detained and the firearm seized. The young women were taken to the São José Hospital in Lisbon, while the man is being held at the GNR in Nisa.
One of the victims underwent surgery on his shoulder blade, and another, who was wounded in the arm, also underwent surgery. They are out of danger.
The case has been referred to the Evora Judicial Police, which is investigating. The man will be questioned at the Nisa Court, where he will learn about the coercive measures.
