From Costa to former ministers PS: All the advice Pedro Nuno heard during the state budget negotiations

The secretary general of the Socialist Party, Pedro Nuno Santos, has already listened to public advice from several former Socialist rulers to discuss – and perhaps make viable – the 2025 state budget.

Former Prime Minister António Costa even confirmed the position of the current head of the executive power, Luis Montenegro, who is often accused by the opposition of being interested in early elections, when in an interview with the channel NowIn July, he said that “holding governments accountable” should be done “through the specific instruments provided for in the Constitution: the vote of no confidence and the vote of confidence.”

The Socialist, elected President of the European Council, recalled that “the State budget, no matter who governs, is an essential instrument for the normal functioning of the country”, therefore “it is good for the country to have state budgets” and “a government of twelfths is not desirable.

“Neither the government should turn the budget into a vote of confidence, nor should the opposition turn the budget into a vote of no confidence,” Costa said. “It is normal for the opposition not to make the budget impossible from the start, but to be prepared for the budget to become viable without perceiving it as support for the government,” he added.

In an interview with BusinessIn July, former Economy Minister Pedro Siza Vieira believed:“It is convenient and important for the country that the state budget be adopted,” understanding that “none of the parties currently represented in parliament are interested” in the opposite.

The Socialist warned that the PS’s opposition cycle would have to be “long-lasting” while the PSD focused on governance rather than “constantly turning parliament into a battlefield”. However, he hinted that the gradual reduction of the IRC, defended by the government, from 21% to 15%, would not “facilitate the approval of the draft state budget”.

This Saturday, former Finance Minister João Leão said that “the PS must strive to make” the document viable “through some kind of negotiations.”

In an interview with NICThe current member of the European Court of Auditors argued that because Chega is “weakened by the result in Europe”, the Socialists have “more room to negotiate” with the government, recommending that the talks could focus on IRS Jovem and “make the offer more balanced”.
