The Portuguese Armed Forces are stepping up their support to fight the fires in Madeira, with three active fronts currently in place and work underway since Wednesday.
The army provided support – transportation to the airport, food and accommodation – to 76 operational personnel. Special firefighting forces arrived from the continent. In addition, the army provided and delivered 100 mattresses to the parish of Curral das Freiras, and patrols and surveillance were increased.
So far, 160 people have been evicted from their homes and have already been relocated to pavilions and associations with “minimum conditions of comfort and support from a medical and social point of view,” guaranteeing The President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, at a press conference.
