Thailand’s appeal court today upheld activist Jatuporn Saeung’s two-year prison sentence for defaming the monarchy by posing as Queen Suthida during a protest in 2020.
The Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR), which represents the defendant, said on Monday that the social media site’s verdict had been overturned by the Supreme Court, the final court.
The verdict is the latest in a broad legal campaign by authorities to suppress in the courts the pro-democracy movement that sparked mass protests in mid-2020 and opened a public debate about the role of the monarchy in Thai society today, EFE news agency reported.
