Montenegro relies on mayors and MPs as district representatives to nominate SDP leaders

The list of 24 district representatives selected by Luis Montenegro to re-run the PSD presidency in the September elections includes ten incumbent mayors and eight former and current MPs.

The list published this Monday by the candidate of Montenegro shows that the president of the Social Democrats has chosen in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Vila Real, Bragança, Porto, Viseu, Guarda, Leiria, Portalegre and the West Region the names of mayors of Montenegro.

Of these, seven are currently presidents of municipal councils, such as João Manuel Esteves, president of the municipal chamber of Arcos de Valdevez and representative of Viana do Castelo, Fernando Queiroga, president of the municipality of Boticas and representative of Vila Real, or José Luís Gaspar, president of Amarante, whom Montenegro elected in the Porto region.

Fernando Ruas from Viseu, Carlos Condesso, mayor of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Guarda district, José Bernardo from Cadaval – representative of the Western Region – and Fermelinda Carvalho from Portalegre complete the list of mayors among those chosen for their candidacy in Montenegro, which will run under the slogan “Believe in Portugal”.

The list also includes councillors – this concerns the districts of Braga with João Rodrigues from the municipality of Braga and Bragança with Miguel José Abrunoha Martins, mayor of Brigantina.

From the parish councils there was only one choice: the parish president, Ancian Jorge Cancelinha, who is the representative of the Leiria district.

Current and former elected members of the Assembly of the Republic also play a prominent role in this candidacy: there are eight representatives on the list, and the financial representative is Almiro Pereira, recently elected by the Aveiro Circle.

In the district of Aveiro, where the current PSD leader and Prime Minister comes from, the choice fell on the former mayor of Vagos and current deputy, Silvério Regalado.

Still on the list of current names of the Social Democratic bench in Parliament, the representative of Lisbon is Andreia Bernardo, from Coimbra is the deputy Mauricio Marques, in Setúbal Sonia dos Reis was elected, in Beja the representative is the deputy Gonçalo Valente and the representative from outside Europe will be the deputy Flávio Martins, elected by the same constituency in the last legislative elections.

Former MPs José Mendes Bota and Carlos Gonçalves are Montenegro’s versions of Faro and Europe, respectively.

In the Azores and Madeira, the role of representatives will be assumed by the secretaries general of the regional party structures, Luis Pereira and José Prada. The representative of the Social Democratic Youth (SDM) will be João Pedro Luis, the current secretary general of Jota.

From the district structures, Luís Montenegro chose as representatives Manuel Frexes, president of the Castelo Branco district, Ricardo Oliveira, treasurer of the Santarém district, and Francisco Figueira, leader of the Évora district.

The leadership of the electoral campaign will be in the hands of the social democrat Rui Rocha, former president of the municipal council of Ancião, currently the first member of the National Political Commission of the PSD and president of the district assembly of the PSD/Leiria.

Direct elections for the party’s leadership are scheduled for September 6, followed by a Congress that will take place from September 21 to 22 in Braga.

This electoral schedule, proposed by the National Political Commission of the PSD, was approved with one abstention at a meeting of the National Council of the party, the highest body between congresses.

Current Prime Minister Luis Montenegro will re-apply for a second two-year term as president of the PSD, the party he has led since 2022.
