The number of collective layoffs in the second quarter rose almost 44% to 125, especially at smaller companies, with 2,906 workers laid off, the highest number since 2012, it was announced Monday.
In terms of collective layoffs, this is the highest figure since 2021.
According to data from the Directorate General of Employment and Labour Relations (DGERT) published this Monday, the number of collective dismissals reached 125 in the second quarter, compared to 87 in the same period last year.
Small companies stand out: 54 collective layoffs were registered, followed by micro-enterprises (42), medium-sized companies (18) and finally large companies (11).
By region, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo stand out with 68 collective layoffs.
This is followed by the North (34), the Centre (19), Alentejo (three) and the Algarve (one).
In terms of sector of activity, manufacturing accounted for 30% of the collective layoffs registered in the 2nd quarter of 2024, while wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles accounted for 22%.
During the period analysed by DGERT, the peak occurred in the second quarter of 2012, when 262 collective dismissals were recorded.
The lowest numbers were reached in the second quarter of 2018 and 2022: in both cases there were 73 collective dismissals.
There were 2,906 layoffs this quarter, compared with 1,126 in the same period last year.
This is the highest figure since at least 2012.
The number of workers actually laid off is highest in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (56%), followed by the North (33%).
In turn, 3,123 workers are being laid off, compared to 1,216 in the same period last year.
