The National Health Service (SNS) “broke the record for the number of operations” in the first half of this year, performing more than 466,000 operations, according to the Executive Directorate (DE-SNS), which also shows a “slight increase” in waiting lists.
“According to the data obtained on August 19 on the movement of SNS aid, accumulated from January to July, from 2010 to 2024, it was found that SNS has never carried out as many operations as in the first half of 2024, with 466,668 patients. Compared to the same period in 2023, 8.5% more operations were carried out, almost 40 thousand more operations,” DE-SNS said in a statement published this Wednesday.
DE-SNS believes that these figures show that the SNS is “fulfilling its mission in guaranteeing citizens access to healthcare,” associating the higher number of surgeries performed with a higher number of consultations, which “has also led to an increase in the number of registrations for surgical operations.”
“Despite the increase in registrations, SNS responded with almost 40,000 additional transactions and a slight increase in the transaction queue by 0.3%. of the 9,374 transactions conducted at LIC [lista de inscritos em cirurgia] oncology April 30, the date that marks the starting point of Onkostop. [plano que pretende regularizar a lista de espera para operações em oncologia]The operations that were not carried out were planned,” the statement said.
DE-SNS says it is monitoring the situation and has instructed local health facilities to assess the possibility of recording patients beyond the maximum response time guaranteed (TMRG) “by the end of the year.”
“The data also point to greater access to surgical care: the number of users registered on the waiting list has increased, by 6.7% more than in the same period in 2023,” adds the DE-SNS statement, which believes that this increase reflects greater access to the National Health System, thanks to more consultations, diagnoses and operations.
