50 municipalities are currently at maximum fire risk

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which also forecasts a risk for Madeira, about 50 municipalities on the Portuguese mainland are at maximum risk of fire this Thursday due to the hot weather.

On the continent, about 50 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Viseu, Portalegre, Guarda, Vila Real and Bragança are at the highest risk of fires.

The highest maximum temperatures forecast for this Thursday will be reached in Castelo Branco and Evora with 38 degrees Celsius, followed by Portalegre and Beja with 36 degrees, and Santarem, Braga, Vila Real and Bragança with 34.

IPMA has also placed several municipalities in all districts of mainland Portugal at very high fire risk.

IPMA estimates that fire danger will remain in some areas until at least Monday.

This risk, defined by IPMA, has five levels, from low to maximum. The calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and the amount of precipitation over the past 24 hours.

According to IPMA, which extended the yellow heat warning in the north, the island of Madeira, where a rural fire has been raging for more than a week, also poses very high, high and moderate rural fire risk this Thursday in some regions of the southern coast and mountainous areas, as well as Porto Santo until 18:00 this Thursday.

A yellow warning is issued by IPMA when a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.

IPMA forecasts for this Thursday on the continent partly cloudy to clear skies and light to moderate winds from the western quadrant, sometimes strong from the northwest in the western coastal strip south of Cabo da Roca and in the mountains of the Central and Southern coast, especially in the afternoon.

The forecast also indicates the possibility of fog or morning mist, particularly on the west coast, and lower temperatures, especially maximums.

Minimum temperatures will range from 14 degrees (in Vila Real and Viseu) to 19 (in Faro), and maximum temperatures from 22 (in Viana do Castelo and Porto) to 38 (in Castelo Branco and Évora).

For the Madeira archipelago, IPMA forecasts partly cloudy or clear skies, light to moderate winds from the north-east, sometimes strong in the highlands and in the extreme east and west of Madeira Island, especially in the afternoon, and a slight drop in temperature.

In Funchal, temperatures will range from 21 to 27 degrees Celsius, and in Porto Santo from 21 to 26 degrees.
