Democrats Urge Americans Living in Portugal to Vote for Kamala Harris

Democrats on Wednesday urged Americans living in Portugal to vote for Kamala Harris in the next presidential election, warning of a “grave threat to the stability of Europe and the world.”

In response to Luce, on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, former United States Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman directly appealed to North American voters living in Portugal to register to vote and place their trust in current Vice President and Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris.

“Many Americans love Portugal, and many Americans choose Portugal as a second home. (…) My message to Americans in Portugal is simple: stability in Europe really matters to the United States,” Heyman told the press. Democrats Abroad, the official arm of the Democratic Party for U.S. citizens living abroad.

“The role that the United States plays as partners of NATO and European countries is important for stability in the world,” he stressed.

The former diplomat said many North Americans tend to underestimate the importance of foreign policy and maintaining close relationships with countries and international alliances such as NATO, recalling that shortly after the North Atlantic Treaty Organization first invoked Article 5 of its founding treaty. The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

NATO’s response to the events of September 11 prompted the organization to actively engage in the fight against terrorism, launch its first operations outside the Euro-Atlantic region and begin a far-reaching transformation of its capabilities, the military alliance’s portal reports.

Bruce Heyman has argued that Americans living abroad vote differently than those living in the United States, arguing that those abroad weigh foreign policy issues and the United States’ view of the world when they vote.

“If you care about America’s relationships with our allies and abroad, you should vote for Kamala Harris,” he urged.

“We have a real threat. Much closer to you. [de Portugal] than we [EUA]. And Vladimir Putin [Presidente russo] “This is a serious threat. It represents a serious threat to the stability of Europe and the world,” he stressed, emphasizing the deterrent nature of the Atlantic Alliance.

Comparing former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Heyman told Lusa that only the Democratic nominee cares about the security and protection of Europe and the United States.

“My message to Americans in Portugal is to register, get your ballot and vote for Kamala Harris,” he concluded.

Democrats Abroad has 52 committees in Europe, America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The purpose of these committees is to inform Americans abroad of their rights and to help them participate in the U.S. political process.

At the Democratic National Convention, which runs through Thursday, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will accept their nominations as candidates for president and vice president of the United States in a race that will pit them against Republican tycoon Donald Trump after Joe Biden dropped out of the White House race.
