Former Prime Minister António Costa will take part in the Socialist Academy, which will be held in Tomar from August 28 to September 1, the day of the “return” of PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos.
In line with the programme of this training and political reflection initiative aimed at young people, to which the Lusa agency had access, the dinner marking the return of the President-elect of the European Council and former Secretary General of the PS to party initiatives will take place on Saturday, 31 August.
On the afternoon of the last day of the Socialist Academy, Sunday, September 1, all expectations were focused on the speech of Pedro Nuno Santos, which would mark the resumption of the political activity of the PS after the holidays.
Around 80 young people between the ages of 18 and 30 will be in Tomar for the five days of the third edition of the Socialist Academy, which will open on Wednesday with speeches from the head of the PS list in the last Europe, MEP Marta Temido, former minister Duarte Cordeiro, JS Secretary General Miguel Costa Matos and the mayor of Tomar Hugo Cristóvão. On this first day, the guest of the dinner will be the president of the PS, Carlos César, who will give a speech.
The agenda for Thursday, August 29, includes highlights such as a speech by Giacomo Filibeck, Secretary General of the European Socialist Party, or a course on “International Relations, Security and Defense” taught by Bernardo Pires de Lima. That same day, participants will also have a session on “Housing Policy” with the President of the Chamber of Matosinhos and the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), Luisa Salgueiro, as well as a dinner with former BE MP Ana Drago and a comedy evening with Jovem Conservator de Reita.
On Friday, August 30, the guest at the dinner will be the parliamentary leader of the PS, Alexandra Leitao, but before that, during the day there will be a program with sessions on the economy or territorial cohesion – the latter with the former minister in this area, Ana Abruñosa – or even an area dedicated to the environment, which marks the second participation in this Socialist Academy of the former minister Duarte Cordeiro.
The highlight of Saturday will be the speech given at the dinner by António Costa, but until then, the participants of the Socialist Academy will have other activities to do, including a simulation of the Assembly of the Republic, with the participation of the deputy Pedro Delgado Alves. In addition to time for group work, there will also be a visit to the Museum of National Resistance and Freedom in the fort of Peniche, which will be accompanied by José Pedro Soares, who was a political prisoner in this prison from June 1973 to April 1974.
On the morning of the final day, which will end with a speech by Pedro Nuno Santos, the participants of the Socialist Academy will still have time to present their group work. “The third edition of the Socialist Academy will be partly aimed at preparing the next local elections, so the participants will be asked to reflect on public policies to respond to the challenges of the host municipality of Tomar,” reads a note sent to Luce by PS.
This will be the first “comeback” of the era of Pedro Nuno Santos, who won the PS internal elections in December 2023 and replaced António Costa as party leader after the dismissal of the former prime minister following Operation Influencer.
