Santa Clara coach Vasco Matos admitted that Saturday’s game against Casa Pia will be difficult, but made it clear that the Azorean football team wants to “always win” and “fight for the three points”.
“We always want to win. I don’t know what will happen in the game. Right now, what’s inside us and what’s in our heads is the fight for three points. That’s it, nothing more,” the coach said.
The Azores coach spoke at a press conference held at the São Miguel stadium in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, on the eve of the game against Casa Pia, which is counted as part of the third round of the I League.
Vasco Matos admitted that “it will be a difficult game” as the opponent “hasn’t got any points yet” and will want to score.
“This will be a very difficult team, and we will have to face it by focusing on our work, on the development of our team,” he emphasized, stressing that the opponent is “a good team that is stabilizing” in the tournament table. I League: “This is a team that already has some base from previous years, that has quality and wants to score its first points. Therefore, we expect a strong opponent, and we must face them.”
The 43-year-old coach stressed that Santa Clara intends to continue to be a “strong, extremely ambitious and very competitive team” and that his players are “very motivated” for Saturday’s game.
“This is our job. The team got where we wanted to go, namely this championship, and now we continue to develop because we have to be aware of what we are doing,” he stressed.
However, he admitted that the work already done is still not enough for the individual, collective and internal ambitions of the Azorean club: “Therefore, challenges will be at the door every day and we must prepare ourselves. Work, being at this club is a source of pride for all of us and a source of great ambition.”
After the 2-0 defeat to Porto in the previous round, he admitted that the Azorean team has to take the results “normally” because ambitions do not depend on the opponent, but rather on how they behave on the pitch.
“The focus is on us, all of us, understanding what we need to do on the pitch. We have to make everyone think about the same thing at the same time. That was our job. And make the team feel comfortable on the pitch, understanding every moment of the game,” concluded Vasco Matos.
On Saturday at 3:30 p.m., Santa Clara, with three points, will play Casa Pia, still without points, at the Rio Mayor Municipal Stadium.
