Fire at E-Redes substation leaves 4,000 customers without power in Reguengos de Monsaraz

About 4,000 E-Redes customers in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, Evora district, have been without power since Friday afternoon due to a fire at a local electrical substation, which has now been extinguished, the company said.

As reported by E-Redes, in a written explanation sent to the Lusa agency, this Friday at 12:26 “an incident occurred at the Reguengos de Monsaraz (SE) substation that affected approximately 4 thousand customers.”

“The incident was triggered by a mechanical failure of the SE circuit breaker and caused a small fire that required the intervention of firefighters,” the company said.

In a conversation with Lusa, the mayor of this Alentejo municipality, Marta Prates, said that there is no electricity “in the city of Reguengos de Monsaraz and in the parish of Corval.”

“Contingency plans are in place, essential facilities such as schools and health centres have alternative energy sources,” he stressed.

According to the mayor, “two generators are working and four more are on the way” and “it is expected to take another three hours before the situation is restored.”

In an explanation provided to Luse, E-Redes said that firefighters and company crews were mobilized to deal with the fire and “arrived at the scene around 1:30 p.m.”

“All maneuvers were carried out online to minimize the impact on customers,” the company assured, adding that “by 23:00” it is expected that “the situation will be resolved.”

A source from the Subregional Command for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of Central Alentejo told Lusa that the fire was considered extinguished at around 2:30 p.m.

A total of 15 operators were mobilised to tackle the blaze, supported by six vehicles, including firefighters and E-Redes and city council staff.
