‘Lisbon is a seismic city, we will always have earthquakes’: Carlos Moedas says city is ready to respond

Carlos Moedas reacted calmly to the earthquake that struck early Monday morning, telling CMTV that “the scale this earthquakeThat very low compared to what is called for by national or local plans.” He also mentioned that “Lisbon is a seismic city, we will always have earthquakes” and stated that the city is prepared to cope with the possible consequences of seismic activity.

The mayor also recalled the inspection carried out on more than 1,500 buildings in Lisbon to ensure their readiness for earthquakes, which found that only 10% of municipal buildings needed reinforcement, as well as the actions taken with parish communities to manage evacuation plans in the event of earthquakes recorded in recent months.

The city is also equipped with tsunami warning sirens, which did not have to be activated on Monday.

Moedas also said Lisbon “is a world example” in terms of training engineers to construct buildings that are well prepared for earthquakes.

This morning’s earthquake (which also shook Spain) has not yet caused any personal or material damage, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
