The President of the Republic reacted this Saturday to the headline morning Post which announced the awarding of Antonio Cardoso Marcelo Rebelo de Souza. The entrepreneur in the field of public catering owed about two million to the tax authorities and received a medal of the Order of Merit, presented by the President of the Republic.
In a note published this afternoon on the website of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza elaborates that “appealed to the Council of Orders of Merit to investigate the situation in light of the applicable regulations.”
“I have already sent morning Post that Mr. Antonio Cardoso was awarded the medal of the Order of Merit at the suggestion of the respective Council of Orders, based on information transmitted by a person from Porto, a university professor and director of the hospital,” he adds.
The decoration, which took place last month, was motivated by the help his restaurants provided to a hospital in São João, in Porto, during the pandemic, the businessman said. The debt declared by the tax authorities to Adriano Correia Cardoso is the result, according to a ruling by the Northern Central Administrative Court, of a tax audit conducted on the income and movement of money in the businessman’s private bank accounts between 2009 and 2012.
