PSD President and current Prime Minister Luis Montenegro will be the only candidate in the direct elections for the party’s leadership on September 6, an unprecedented situation in the last eight years.
An official source in the PSD confirmed to Lusa that before 3:00 pm this Monday, the deadline for submitting candidacies for the leadership of the PSD, only the candidacy of Luís Montenegro had been accepted, making him the only candidate for the leadership of the National Political Commission, a position to which he was elected on May 28, 2022.
The last time the PSD had a single candidate for leadership was in 2016, the last election in which Pedro Passos Coelho was re-elected as party president with over 95% of the vote. Since then, all direct elections have featured two or more candidates.
The direct elections of the SDP will take place on September 6, and about 42 thousand Social Democrats with current quotas will be able to vote in them, out of a total number of active activists exceeding 90 thousand, according to information available on the SDP website.
DETAILSFIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION
As part of the global strategy with which it is re-applying for the leadership of the SDP, Montenegro prioritizes “fighting corruption” and “reducing the tax burden on families in the IRS,” in addition to cutting the IRC to 15%.
COMPREHENSIVE CANDIDATE
Regarding the 2026 presidential elections, Montenegro pledges to support a “comprehensive candidate worthy of voters’ trust.” The SDP leader also names winning the local elections as the first goal of the next term.
