According to estimates from the Regional Statistical Service (SREA) published this Wednesday, the Azores recorded approximately 584.5 thousand overnight stays in tourist accommodation facilities in July, up 6.2% compared to the same period last year.
“The tourism indicator predicts that in July, the Autonomous Region of the Azores will register approximately 584.5 thousand overnight stays in all tourist accommodation establishments (hospitality, local accommodation and rural tourism),” SREA said in a publication published on its website.
According to the regional statistics service, “the value of this overnight stay estimate is 6.2% higher than the final cost for the same month (550.1 thousand).”
The Tourism Indicator report also shows the number of passengers disembarking at Azores airports in July, arriving from abroad and within the country (excluding the islands of the archipelago).
According to data previously provided by SREA, the number of passengers on international flights (58,264) increased by 25.2%, while the number of travellers from the continent and Madeira (111,488) increased by 6.7%.
The publication also highlights withdrawals and purchases from ATMs and automated payment terminals (TPA) made by citizens (EUR 212,977 million) and foreigners (EUR 48,984 million) in July in the Azores.
Purchases made in TPA reached 205.2 million euros (12.2% more than in the same period last year), of which 160.9 million were made with cards from national banks (11.1% more) and 44.4 million with cards from international banks (plus 16.4%).
ATM withdrawals reached €56.7 million (down 1.5%), of which €52.1 million were domestic (down 1.4%) and €4.6 million were international (down 2.9%).
According to SREA, the Tourism Indicator (IT) “is designed to assess the overall development of economic activity in the tourism sector in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.”
“IT-Açores is the result of adding together the estimates of the number of overnight stays registered in the three types of tourist facilities and is published approximately three weeks before the publication of the main points of tourist activity,” the publication says.
When estimating overnight stays in the hotel industry, rural tourism and local accommodation, “the values recorded in the hotel and other accommodation guest stay survey are used” and “trends are extrapolated according to the expected response rates in each case,” he adds.
