Prime Minister Luis Montenegro praised on Thursday the “indisputable ability” of María Luis Albuquerque to be European Commissioner.
“I believe that this choice, in terms of the quality and abilities of the chosen person, Dr. Maria Luis Albuquerque, is beyond doubt,” he said, speaking to reporters.
Speaking on the sidelines of the opening of a new cultural facility in Penafiel, Porto district, the head of government noted that “Portugal will certainly have representation in the European Commission, which will be an honour for the country, but above all it will contribute to a European policy that serves the interests of European citizens.”
Asked about the PS’s criticism of Maria Luis Albuquerque’s appointment, namely the government’s alleged “lack of sense of state”, Montenegro responded that the model that led to the appointment of the previous Portuguese commissioner as executive director, António Costa, “was very similar to this”.
He added critically that when the European Commissioner was appointed by the previous Socialist government [Elisa Ferreira]The reaction of the largest opposition party at the time, the SDP, was quite different.
“It is important to analyze and see the differences with what the main opposition party is saying today,” he emphasized.
