The government has removed Jerónimo Cunha from the position of Director General of the Department of Energy and Geology, which he has held since September 1, 2023, after being appointed by the previous Environment Minister PS Duarte Cordeiro.
In an order published this Friday in Diário da República, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, determined the “termination of the mandate of the Service Commission of Master Jerónimo Viana Borges Meira da Cunha from the position of Director General of Energy and Geology”, effective this Friday.
Jerónimo Cunha was João Galamba’s deputy between 2018 and 2022, when he was Secretary of State for Energy.
In the order, the Environment Minister justified the dismissal “in view of the need to give new momentum to DGEG services.” [Direção-Geral de Energia e Clima]and the implementation of new guidelines for the management of this Directorate-General in order to achieve an effective improvement in the implementation of the policies to be pursued in the field of energy, geological and mining resources, namely making its response more effective and efficient in the execution of the financing programmes for which it is responsible, as well as the speed of licensing procedures.”
The Government also emphasizes that, in accordance with the Regulation on the management personnel of services and bodies of state administration, “the service commission of persons holding management positions may be abolished in connection with the need to impose a new orientation on the management of services.”
The ruling states that Jerónimo Cunha had previously been heard on the reasons for his removal as stated by the government.
