The Portuguese Navy has already expressed condolences to the National Republican Guard for the death of soldiers after the helicopter they were travelling in crashed into the Douro in Lamego on Friday.
Four bodies have been found so far, and search operations are ongoing at the site of the missing soldier.
“These heroes of the Emergency Protection and Assistance Force (EPAF) have passed away while fulfilling their oath and demonstrating the bravery that their profession demands. To their families, friends and comrades, we offer our deepest condolences and hope that they find solace in the memories and legacy that each soldier uniquely leaves us together at this time of pain over the loss of real heroes,” reads a statement posted on social media.
The pilot of the plane survived the tragedy. Luis Rebelo is in stable condition and is under the supervision of doctors.
