The President of the Republic is shocked by the helicopter crash on the Douro River involving NTC soldiers

The President of the Republic has already sent a note of condolence for the death of NTC soldiers after the helicopter they were still working on crashed into the Douro River this Friday.

Read the full message:

“It was with great shock that President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa learned of the tragic air crash involving a helicopter carrying members of the Heliborn Initial Attack Group, the Emergency Protection and Assistance Unit (UEPS) of the Republican National Guard (GNR), which resulted in the death of four NTC soldiers and a missing soldier on duty, as a result of a fire in the Bayão district.

The President of the Republic, who was following this terrible event together with the Prime Minister, at the operational command post in Lamego and with the Minister of the Interior, agreed with the Government to establish a day of national mourning for tomorrow, August 31st.

At this time of great sorrow, the President of the Republic expresses his sincere condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, as well as to all GNR professionals, in particular the UEPS soldiers, recalling the value of service and dedication beyond the call of duty of those who dedicated themselves and gave their lives for the safety of all Portuguese people.”
