Paulo Carmona to replace Jeronimo Cunha at DGEG

The government has chosen Paulo Carmona to head the General Directorate of Energy and Geology (DGEG) on a replacement basis following the dismissal of Jerónimo Cunha less than a year ago.

“The Minister of Environment and Energy has appointed Paulo Jorge Leal da Silva Carmona as Director General of the General Directorate of Energy and Geology to replace him,” the statement said.

The government has removed Jerónimo Cunha from the position of Director General of the Department of Energy and Geology, which he has held since September 1, 2023, after being appointed by the previous Environment Minister PS Duarte Cordeiro.

For the manager, the selection of a new CEO is intended to ensure the normal functioning of the service until the opening of the competitive procedure and the subsequent appointment of a new manager.

“This decision follows the termination of the previous holder’s position and is aimed at ensuring the continuity and normal functioning of the service until the opening of the competitive procedure and the subsequent appointment of a new holder,” the statement said, without giving details of the reasons for the departure of the previous head.

The Environment Ministry stressed that the appointment of Paulo Carmona is seen as “an important step to strengthen the momentum that the government intends to bring to the energy sector.”

On the other hand, he highlighted the professional experience and profile of the new DGEG CEO, who said he has extensive management and leadership experience.

The appointment order will come into force on September 2.

Jerónimo Cunha, who previously headed the DGEG, was João Galamba’s deputy between 2018 and 2022, when he was Secretary of State for Energy.

In an order published this Friday in Diário da República, Environment Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho justified the suspension “taking into account the need to give new dynamism to the services of the DGEG, as well as the implementation of new management guidelines for this department as a whole, in order to achieve an effective improvement in the implementation of the policies that need to be carried out in the energy, geological and mining sectors, in particular making its actions more efficient and effective in response to the implementation of the financing programs for which it is responsible, as well as the speed of the authorization procedures.”
