Schmidt impresses in defence: Watch Benfica’s eleven against Moreirense

This Friday, Benfica avoided defeat against Moreirense with a last-minute penalty and made the score 1-1 in the first match of the fourth round of the First Football League with a “tense” ending for the “red” hosts.

Marcos Leonardo secured a point for the Eagles in the 90th and 7th minutes after Luis Asoue fouled Leandro Barreira in the conego area after Ofori had opened the scoring in the 84th minute with a deflected shot from Antonio Silva, at a stage when the game was “broken”.

Still without a single away triumph in this championship, Luz’s team will end the day with seven points, behind at least Sporting and Porto, the teams that meet on Saturday, as well as Famalicao, for which they were toasted by a chorus of whistles from Benfica fans, most of the 5,244 spectators.

Many spectators called for the resignation of Eagles coach Roger Schmidt, who has not yet won a single game in three official matches played in the city of Moreira de Conegos, and insulted the club’s president Rui Costa after a draw with local team de Guimarães, who also collected seven points in the I League.

For the first time this season, Di Maria was the Reds’ hero in the first quarter of an hour, with runs down the right, dribbles and crosses that tested the Konegi defence, but Kevin Silva was only put to the test after six minutes, after Kokcu had already fired over the bar for two.

During this period, Madson Monteiro lost time and space to beat Trubin in the third minute after a mishandled clearance by Alanzinho, and tried a bicycle kick in the seventh minute to turn Moreirense’s counter-attacking ability into a dangerous ball.

Slower after the first 15 minutes and reliant on the Argentina international, the Reds showed little creativity to serve players in the box and saw Moreirense counter-attack again late in the first half and put the ball past newly introduced player Gabrielzinho, the move cancelled out after an appeal to the video referee due to a foul by Alanzinho on Leandro Barreiro early in the move.

The team coached by Roger Schmidt came out in the second half with Renato Sanches replacing the ‘yellow’ Florentino and showed a different ‘face’ thanks to a more effective pressing that ‘locked’ the team from the town of Moreira de Conegos in their last stronghold.

The Luz team turned the rise into opportunities in the 51st minute with a tense shot from Pavlidis that was saved by Kevin Silva, and in the 53rd minute the “canonical” goalkeeper stopped a deflection from Pavlidis and a reload from Di Maria.

Moreirense coach César Peixoto responded to this period of ‘things’ by changing the ‘core’ from Ruben Ismael to Sidney Tavares and saw the Guimarães side respond with a header from Maracas that tested Trubin’s attention, in the 63rd minute.

The game then became stalemate as the Eagles lost momentum and only picked up speed again in the final 10 minutes when Ofori and Benny took advantage of the Reds’ advantage to create an effective combination, ending the scoreless tie.

The Lisbon team responded with their “heart” rather than their “head” and had no clear chance of scoring until a penalty was converted by striker Joaquim de Almeida Freitas, who came off the bench in the 65th minute, still unable to “calm” the discontent evident at the Comendador Stadium.
