A child born in Aleppo, northern Syria during the February 6 earthquake, was adopted by her uncles this Saturday after being overwhelmed by the elements. The newborn was rescued alive, but the rescuers found the mother already dead. Father and brothers also died in the earthquake.
Hala and Khalil Al-Sawadi, the girl’s paternal uncles, took Afraa, named after her mother, from the Jihan hospital where the girl was being treated. “There were legal procedures to confirm the genetic relationship, as well as a DNA test,” the uncle told Reuters.
Footage posted on social media shows a rescuer rescuing a newborn from the rubble.
“This little girl means so much to us because there is no one in the family but this child. She will be a memory for me, her aunt, and the whole family in her parents’ village,” the uncle told Reuters.
Hala and Khalil Al-Sawadi had a son, Ataa, three days after the earthquake, and Sawadi said he would raise the two children together.
