A new analysis shows that stalking and harassment now account for a third of all violent crimes reported by the police.

The number of cases of stalking and harassment has more than doubled since 2015, when 328,000 cases were reported between April 2015 and March 2016.
A separate analysis by Labor also found that there were 250 outbreak-related incidents every week over the past year, and incidents of indecent exposure and voyeurism have increased dramatically by 65% since 2015.
Police recorded 13,062 cases of the outbreak last year, up from 7,847 in 2015.
Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said stalking and harassment “poison the lives of too many women” and flashing is “a serious crime but too often underestimated.”
She vowed that the Labor government would significantly increase police work to combat such violent and sexual crimes.
“The policing must be the backbone of a community of known and trusted local PCSO officers and staff who can support and protect victims and act against persistent or dangerous offenders,” she said.
“But conservatives have stabbed local cops and PCSOs, which has made our streets less safe.”
Government figures show there are 6,000 fewer police officers on UK roads since 2015 and the number of community support police officers (PCSOs) has halved since the Conservatives took power in 2010.
On Monday, the government announced tougher measures to combat domestic violence to protect women and girls.
Under new legislation announced on Monday, control or coercion will be equated with physical violence, meaning offenders will be more closely monitored by police.
The government also promised that offenders sentenced to a year or more for control and coercive behavior would be registered with the Violent and Sex Offenders Registry to ensure they were “not subject to scrutiny.”
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak commented on the statement that “no woman or girl should ever feel safe in her home or community.”
“We are making it a priority for the police to tackle violence against women and girls and strengthen the way we deal with offenders – first and foremost to prevent more of these crimes and bring more offenders to justice,” he added.
