The number of unemployed people registered with the IEFP fell 9.6% in the first month of the year to 322,087, the lowest in 30 years in the second month of January, the government said this Monday.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Welfare, “the number of unemployed people registered with the IEFP [Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional] in January (322,087 people) was the second lowest January month in 30 years, recording a 9.5% decrease (-33,782 people) compared to January 2022.”
However, compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed increased by 4.9%, which is an increase of 15,082 people.
Youth unemployment in January also registered the second lowest value this month, as there is a record, with a decrease of 6.4% (-2421 young people) compared to January 2022.
In the first month of this year, according to government data, 35,397 young people were unemployed, and the percentage of youth unemployment (11%) compared to total unemployment remained at the same month’s level (10.6%).
As for long-term unemployment, compared to January 2022, there was a decrease of 29% (-50,477 people).
Similarly, the percentage of long-term unemployment (38.5%) compared to general unemployment also decreased compared to the figure for the same month (49%).
In January, 123,864 people were in a situation of long-term unemployment, which is 1.8% more than in the previous month (+321 people).
By region, there was a year-on-year decline across the country, with the exception of Alentejo, with a focus on a 12.5% decline in the Lisbon region.
At the sectoral level, year-on-year declines were observed in the secondary (-8.6%) and tertiary (-9%) sectors and growth in the agricultural sector (+2.3%).
