An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale hit the island of Santa Maria in the Azores.

An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was felt on the island of Santa Maria, in Vila do Porto, San Pedro, Almagreira and Santo Espiritu, Civil Protection reported on Tuesday.

The website of the Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service of the Azores reports that the earthquake was recorded by the Azores Seismic Information and Observation Center (CIVISA) at 22:40 local time on Monday (23:40 Lisbon), with an epicenter at about 51 km east of Santo Espirito, on the island of Santa Maria, located in the eastern group of the Azores archipelago.

“According to the currently available information, an earthquake with a maximum intensity III / IV (on the modified Mercalli scale) was felt in Vila do Porto, San Pedro, Almagreira and Santo Espirito (Vila do Porto municipality),” adds protection civil.

The modified Mercalli scale measures “degrees of intensity and corresponding description” and, if IV intensity is present, is considered “moderate”, “shaking of parked cars”, “shaking of windows, doors and utensils”, and “glasses and utensils collide or clink”. “, walls or wooden structures may creak, according to the Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) on its website.

According to IPMA, at intensity III, considered weak, the impact “is felt inside the house” and “hanging objects sway”, feeling “a vibration similar to that caused by the passage of heavy vehicles.”
