President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said this Thursday that he had already received another dose of the covid-19 vaccine as he is over 70 years old and urged the Portuguese to vaccinate themselves if possible.
The head of state spoke to reporters at the former royal arena next to the Palacio de Belen in Lisbon at the end of a meeting with Portuguese “startups” that will take part in this year’s web summit.
Asked if he was concerned that the emergence of new options could exacerbate the spread of covid-19, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza relativized the situation, stating that “there are countries that have not yet emerged from the pandemic, namely Asians”, but what about in Europe ” it was different.”
According to the President of the Republic, “all health systems have learned from the pandemic and will therefore be closely monitoring for signs of a possible recurrence of a pandemic nature.”
“For now, the idea is that we are facing a recurring epidemic and that the best way to counter it is through vaccination,” defended Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, revealing: “Yesterday I received the vaccine. [quarta-feira]”.
The head of state said that in Portugal “a very significant number of over 70 people have been vaccinated, and over 80 were the first to be vaccinated.”
“I therefore call for, although this is a voluntary gesture, the Portuguese to be vaccinated to the extent possible, because this is how the situation with epidemics is faced – provided that the pandemic becomes an epidemic,” he added.
